Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media as well as a public speaker, and Canadian. She created Feminist Frequency, a site with videos and comments on the representations of women in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and award-winning feminist for more than a decade. Feminist Frequency is a website for education that examines female roles in pop culture, is run by Sarkeesian. She's dedicated to breaking down stereotypes of women as they appear in popular media. In addition, she is working to increase awareness about cyber-bullying targeting women, as well as other marginalized groups of society. Sarkeesian, who holds the degree of Master's in Social and Political Theory from York University, is also popular as a public speech-maker. She has delivered speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO Festival and United Nations Broadband Working Group to Gender. Interested in issues concerning gender identity and feminism from at an early age, she created her own website Feminist Frequency in 2009 when she was studying at the University. Her website was in the process of launching a collection of videos on the web that looked at gender roles in video games at the time she came under the sway of online harassment. But the assault did have been a hindrance, rather it only bolstered her resolve as a feminist critic of media. As a result of the many contributions she has made to feminism, she is awarded numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian is an award awarded media critic, and author of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit which studies the portrayals of women in pop-culture and the narratives that surround them.
